CUT (Technikon Free State) opened its doors in 1981 with 285 students. In 2004, restructuring of the higher education landscape allowed CUT to change its “technikon” status to a name that is a true reflection of what the university stands for: Central University of Technology, Free State. It also has a campus in Welkom. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); management sciences; humanities; and education are only a few of the technological subjects offered at the two campuses. Some learning programmes can also be pursued electronically via the internet. Work-integrated learning (WIL) is offered in all programmes to make sure students graduate with relevant experience and are equipped with the right set of skills.
