Established in 1904, Rhodes University is the sixth oldest South African university in continuous operation. Located in Makhanda / Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, Rhodes University boasts a proud journalistic tradition. There are also an especially high number of radio celebrities who graduated at Rhodes – many of them having spent time with the university’s campus radio station Rhodes Music Radio.

There are just over 8,000 students, with some fifty-five percent living in the University residences. Students come from all over southern Africa and 18 percent are international students from 54 countries worldwide. Rhodes enjoys the distinction of having among the best undergraduate pass and graduation rates in South Africa, outstanding postgraduate success rates, and the best research output per academic staff member. It also offers online courses for distance learning.
