The University of Limpopo is the result of a merger between the former Medical University of Southern Africa and the University of the North, which occurred in 2005. The University nestles in the foothills of the Hwiti (Wolkberg range) in Mankweng, midway between Polokwane and the spectacular splendour of Magoebaskloof. The university caters to close on 22,000 students.

In 2017, the University of Limpopo launched South Africa’s first pilot plant in manganese beneficiation to produce rechargeable batteries. The University of Limpopo launched TV White Spaces providing broadband access to local schools as well as technological support and training. UL is also home to the first medical school in Limpopo Province since the democratic dispensation in 1994.
