The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is a result of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR) and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University. The University has four campuses and boasts world-class, internationally recognised academic programmes. The institution is one of the largest comprehensive contact universities in South Africa with over 50,000 students. UJ chose not have a coat of arms but allowed students to put forward their proposals for a logo.

UJ is the first and only African university admitted to the highly respected consortium of 28 research-intensive universities in the world, Universitas 21. As an academic and research leader in Africa, UJ is taking the lead in facing the reality and existence of 4IR by applying 4IR to its teaching and learning.
